Mark 1: 29 – 39
5 February 2012
A miraculous healing. And her response? She gets up and serves the men. Really? If that’s me and I am cured of a disease by miracle, I am dancing in the streets, shouting from the rooftops, and shouting hallelujah. My first response would not be to serve a meal.
Gender expectation? Motherly instinct to care for her boys? I don’t know.
Here’s my take on it. Most of us would ‘party hearty’ when miraculously healed. But Simon’s mother-in-law knew better. She knew dancing in the streets, shouting from the rooftops, getting on to the Dr Phil show or Good Morning America is not the right thing to do.
It is not about you. It’s about God. There is no need to bring attention to yourself. There is only a need to bring attention to God. And what is the best way to bring attention to God? To set yourself aside and serve others. The faithful response to God’s blessings is to serve others, not bring attention to yourself.
